Abuelos Paella Bunting
This project is a visual celebration of my abuelo’s (grandad’s) traditional paella recipe, told through a handmade string of illustrated bunting. Each flag, printed on calico to reflect when it was mass manufactured in Spain in the 18th century, uses simple graphic elements instead of written instructions or measurements to reflect the way my grandad cooks, instinctively, with “a bit of this, a bit of that.”
The use of bunting not only honours the fiestas (festive), communal nature of paella, a dish typically shared among family and friends, but also acts as a symbol of celebration and togetherness.
The tactile quality of the fabric and stitching adds a personal, nostalgic layer, turning a passed-down recipe into a shared visual language that bridges generations.
